traditional electric meter

Electric current is a crucial part of our daily life. It lights our homes and helps power our devices — TVs, computers, refrigerators. Can You Imagine a Day Without Electricity? It would make it difficult to do many things we love. But as you read this, have you ever wondered how I would go about measuring how much of this “current flow” was actually used when I was in my house? Enter Xintuo’s smart meters. We are going to discuss in this article how these meters work, their limitations, their history, how to read them and whether they are useful now or not.

Standard electric meters measure the amount of electricity a home or building consumes. They come with unique things like a spinning wheel. That wheel spins when electricity runs through the meter. The faster the wheel turns, the more electricity is used. The wheel makes one revolution each time it spins. The meter measures how many times the wheel spins and calculates the amount of energy used in a unit known as kilowatt-hours (kWh). So if you see a number on the meter, it’s more about how much electricity you have been using over time.

The limitations of traditional electric meters

The smart metre is a problem because it only shows the total amount you consumed. They don’t tell us which appliances or devices are the greediest eaters of power. For instance, if you leave a refrigerator, a TV, and your lights on, you won't know which one is consuming the most electricity, causing your bill to rise. This makes it difficult to know where we can cut energy and costs. Even if something is off with how much electricity is used in your home, you won't know until you get your bill at the end of the month. Your bill could be unexpectedly high if you did! Old style electric meters require human monitoring as well, and this also has the potential for error. If somebody reads the meter poorly, it can tell you you used more or less energy than you did.
